Scott really like your videos, easy to understand and well thought out. I followed the video step by step but ran into some trouble I hope you can explain. Upgrading my C drive from a Samsung 840 EVO 750GB SSD to Samsung 870 QVO 2TB due to low on disk spaced, only 28GB free. All working as you had shown but when I went to extend the partition the recovery partition was not at the end so I could not extend the partition. I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to move the recovery partition to the end and then extended the newly created partition to the unallocated spaced. When I then rebooted to the new drive, the boot took much longer than it used to and I got a “Runtime Error ..\..\..\..\Common\ClasLib\RuntimeThred.cpp:2604 Failure Condition: mutex->MLockFile (null)” Tried reboot same condition. Unplugged all hard drives except the new SSD same result. I could click OK and the machine would boot but could not open MS outlook or Excel but strangely Word worked. So installed to old drive put everything back to the way it was and all worked as before. Any ideas on what went wrong? I could always do a clean install on the new drive but was hoping not to have to reinstall all the programs. Any help from anyone appreciated. Thanks all

Long one for ya, just some comments appended to various sections of the video... Save now, save often: buy a UPS. That's point number one I'd put on a video tbh, especially for anyone who ever encounters power outages or blips. Everything I've got of value is backed with UPS. Not terribly expensive, lasts years, saves your ass. Not a replacement for saving often but all good solutions come in layers. Antivirus: for common users just keeping defender up and updated + engaging in safe practices is the best advice to stick with, especially when the likes of Norton or Avast turn your computer into a regimented police state of questionable privacy and value. People who aren't in a situation of defaulting to defender either have something custom going on or they've got much bigger problems... some tips from the ThioJoe channel might be of interest related to other means for basic security that don't take too long to implement and massively boost peace of mind. Rather than installing controlling full software suites they include things like boosting up the firewall, disabling features the casual user has no interest in using (closing common attack vectors), and other 'hardening' and debloating will do more to reduce a user's attack surface than appending a third party AV. They're not things to expect novices to know or dive into but might be useful for the important niche of 'family nerd' who knows a little about computers and is trying to do the best job for their computer illiterate comrades. Beyond this, slapping on ublock origin is the best entry antivirus a user on the internet can get. Not to mention makes it more sanitary to use. I notice later in the video that this overlaps with the logic of the user/admin account section. Staying organized: Can't tell you how often I've been on a drive where on top of figuring out what went wrong I can't even get an idea of what they're doing because everything is splashed in my documents, random desktop folders, and even just stuffed in a folder on the C drive because that's quickest from my computer. Where this advice needs to hit the most, it is often too late. I'm still in the market for simple user friendly ways to do a run-once clean organization job and keep it that way. Use a VPN: I do, but here's my obligatory 'it's not a magic bullet'. You're sponsored and all so I know I shouldn't get in the weeds too far on this and I won't. For anyone else just keep in mind that VPNs are no substitute for healthy practices as they are not AV by any means; they are subverted for privacy if you log into accounts attached to your real identity (not to mention the traffic just goes through them instead of your ISP, weigh the advantage when both in theory could save everything if they desire or more likely are compelled by big brother to install trackers and not tell you), and the real way to keep yourself from being tracked too heavily is to block ads and tracking. The further you go in this, the further you compromise: the simplest start for this is ditching chrome in favor of firefox, vivaldi or brave, installing the ublock origin extension, and don't save passwords and private info in the browser because that is some of the weakest protection you can get. Nord is okay. Have a glance at proton if you're cheap and just want to get around basic geoblocks. Never trust the web: see above for steps to reduce the amount of suspicious websites you even end up connecting to, but stay vigilant according to the steps in the video. Posting your email on a public website: just don't in the first place, but even if you use forms properly and register to websites that seem secure, this information can still leak and pass around. If it's not an important website - it's an app, gift card or something - use a "spam account" or an alias (this integration is why I recommend proton mail among other reasons). Password manager: Bitwarden or KeePassXC? :p Separate accounts: the big benefit of multiple emails right here. One to ignore and one that might actually have something important to tell you... UAC: this right here is really what I'd get people to do instead of the split admin/local account tbh. Unwanted apps: if only this was so easy for unwanted windows bloatware. Won't dive into the weeds but smh... anyway the only problem with this advice is if people remove things like codecs, redistributables, image extensions... if you don't know you shouldn't just remove, preferably look it up at the very least. Mac filtering: this interface varies wildly by provider, tbh that xfinity interface is rather obtuse... even my sad netgear router offers a display of what's attached and what's previously attached, and has options to either blacklist unwanted connections or strictly whitelist desired ones (slight inconvenience on first connection, but safer that way). In the future video on the subject hopefully it will look at the friendlier options on the market and if those are presently unavailable, how to set things up which can bypass or intermediate for obtuse low quality software. Might be a time to get into pi-holes... but that's another story altogether. Neat video and best of luck to you. o7

I agree it's handy to have a windows USB but solely for reinstalling windows. The tools themselves fail 99% of the time, the only tool in there that KINDA works is the command prompt. The automatic repair tools are crap and never work. I also think having a Linux USB is a good idea. When windows gives you crap and refuses to do certain things Linux can force it. It also allows you to change or move system files which would otherwise be in use if you were to be running windows.

Hi Scott, Hope all is well with you. Have you come across a Windows 11 update setting up a totally different local account please. The latest Windows 11 update either set up the local account under a name I don't recognise or someone has hacked my computer. When I click to sign in it doesn't require a password (I always use passwords) and wants me to set up Windows 11 for this local user account. I can't change or include a password because it says that the password is managed by the administrator. I set up a local account which I have been using for ages based on a video you did around that time and yes this local account is password protected. If I change the name of the computer it will automatically set up the local account with the name I don't recognise and automatically sign in. Even when I was using a microsoft account as my login I always had a password associated with logging into the computer. Everytime I delete the unknown local user account, it automatically comes back again. I'm really scratching my head with this one. I think it's somehow tied to the lastest Windows 11 update as today (Saturday 18th May Aussie time) is the first I've seen this unknown local account on my computer. The only thing I can say is that this account doesn't have access my my d drive which has all my files and folders on it. Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

OK. Another request. I got into my old lasptop (as you knowe) yesterday following your video. However, I am unable to access the files that are under the original username. Can you point me to instructions how to do that?

I have a Microsoft account but don’t use it and log in with a pin. Well the latest Windows update seems to have killed my computer and it wants the Microsoft password to let me try to fix the computer. I can’t reset pc, command prompt or any fix without it. Problem is I can’t recover the password. The methods I had for recovering the password are no longer available to me. (Deactivated email & new phone number). Is there anything I can do except wipe clean and start over? (Besides finding the login information from 2019).

Try to find the information from 2019 if you can. If you can't, try resetting your Microsoft password from the login screen or from a mobile device. If none of that works, you're going to likely need to do a full reinstall 🥲

I'm asking about my specific video. And you haven't said what your problem is exactly. "A wifi problem" is basically saying "my car is making a noise". The more information you provide, the more likely you are to get the exact help you need.

@danielmarshall9899 thank you. A) did you watch the video I recommended? B) is this an internal wireless adapter, or USB adapter? C) how long has the issue been going on? D) was there something specific that happened that could have caused the issue (ie: Windows update)?

5:55 All the computer problems are either hardware or software… Everyone knows this 😂

Actually, it's not about pointing out "the obvious". It's about coming up with a logical troubleshooting strategy. If something is obviously hardware, chasing a potential software problem is a waste of time. Troubleshooting 101, but your average person may not know the difference or what to look for to eliminate one or the other.
